UN Sustainable Development Goals
Adopted by all UN Member States in 2015, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a universal blueprint to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity and peace by 2030. The Goals are integrated and interdependent and they call on governments, business, finance, and civil society to act together. For companies, the SDGs provide a shared language to link strategy and operations with real-world outcomes across the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of development.
Set clear, time-bound objectives for a better future ("leave no one behind") across poverty, health, education, decent work, climate, biodiversity, equality, and justice. Align incentives so public and private actors direct capital, technology, and know-how toward positive impacts and away from activities that degrade people or planet. Create comparability by offering targets and indicators that organizations can use to measure, manage, and disclose their contributions and adverse impacts. Embed responsibility and resilience by encouraging due diligence on human rights and the environment, fair value chains, and just transitions. In practice, the SDGs turn sustainability from aspiration into measurable action—helping companies connect impact with strategy, risk, and long-term value.
“The SDGs define what the world needs; companies that systematize how—through clear targets, credible data, and transparent reporting—are better positioned to manage risk, attract capital, and deliver durable impact.“
Map your value chain to SDG targets/indicators; assess material impacts (positive and negative), vulnerable groups, and "leave no one behind" gaps. Embed SDGs in board oversight, policies, incentives, and enterprise risk management; align products, operations, procurement, and capital allocation. Translate priorities into science-based and time-bound targets (e.g., climate, nature, decent work, diversity), with interim milestones and accountability. Report progress consistently using recognized frameworks (e.g., GRI for impact transparency, ISSB/IFRS S1–S2/ESRS for investor-grade disclosures), enabling comparability. Mobilize SDG-aligned finance (loans, bonds, blended capital), and partner across your ecosystem (suppliers, customers, NGOs, cities) to scale outcomes (SDG 17).
“This journey is iterative and inclusive. It spans supply chains and city halls, boardrooms and classrooms. It asks institutions to manage risk and create long-term value, and it asks each of us to act with stewardship—today, for 2030 and beyond. The destination is a world where prosperity is shared, opportunity is fair, and nature thrives—and the way we travel there matters as much as arriving.“
